Master Fly Fisher Sizes
We are currently not offering certification but are examining if it is a worthwhile pursuit. Below are the sizes and guidelines we would likely implement:
Given our conservation mission and goal oriented attitude, we have higher allocation standards than many other organizations and provinces. The purpose of these designations is to help Fly Fishers set attainable goals and expand their knowledge, skills and fishing experiences. The Master Angler allocation will have a general category and youth category for anyone under 18.
Rules and Guidelines:
-
Fly Fishing Only - All fish must be caught using common fly fishing methods. This includes; Tenkara, Switch, Spey and Centerpin.
-
Catch and Release - All fish must be released (with the exception of Prussian Carp) and survive. Photos must not show severely injured fish or fish covered in mud, grass, sand or gravel. A fish many not be awarded a master angler certification if the fish is not be handled properly. No holding fish by the eyes or vertically by the gill plates.
-
Photos and Video Required - Photos or video of the measurement and release are required for certification.
-
Good Measurements - A bump board with an accurate measuring tape must be used. Several photos or a video of the fish being measured and released are required. It must be clear that the fish is touching the 0 or bump board end. The Maximal Total Length (pinched tail) is the accepted standard for fish length.
-
Saskatchewan Caught - This is somewhat by the honor system. We are not looking for location bins but do request a waterbody name. Submissions from border sharing waters like Cold Lake, Reindeer Lake, Wollaston Lake and Lake Athabasca are permitted. The location will only be known to the data compilers and the district fisheries biologist to help better inform their stocking, and fisheries management decisions.

Designations
Catching a trophy fish on the fly and attaining the title of Master Fly Fisher are different. The Master Fly Fisher designation is for anglers who have caught a high enough number of trophy fish and Species to demonstrate a wide variety of fly fishing knowledge, skill and experience that is consistent with someone who has began to master fly fishing in the province of Saskatchewan. There is also a Savant designation for adults and Prodigy designation for fly fishers under 18 who attain a high number of trophy species.
We have also created subcategories based on species, location and ecological niche to help fly fishers set goals for themselves.
